SUMMER SQWALK 2021 - Spaced out with the bluebells

19th May 2021

Sqwalkers - Keithee and Jacko, DT, Goosey (Phil), Anytime Tone, Yup, Ali G, DC and JC.

BRIEF NOTES

Jumping on the back of DT's Peak District walks, Yup agreed to arrange a sqwalk for the Stokie locals taking in Keele and Silverdale. Still in a partial lockdown 2 socially distanced tables were booked for lunch.

Having had a gander at a meander around Keele Yup came up with a 10.5m walk  making the most of the bluebell displays before they disappeared for another year.

The walk began at 10am from the Keele University Union bar car park where there was free parking until September.

After a brief stroll around the rear gardens of Keele Hall we passed the hanging rock and entered the bluebell woods.

From here we stretched out from Uranus at the Keele Observatory to the Cheshire Plains, taking in the abandoned Keele golf course, the Silverdale and Apedale Country Parks, and finally The Gresley Arms for lunch.

Walleys quarry and its distinct odour could be spotted in the distance, but thankfully today the wind was in the right direction.

Lunch and ales were provided at The Gresley Arms with it’s magnificent views over the Cheshire plains.  We were greeted by a delightful waitress advising us that we were almost 15 minutes late, and that our table was almost given away. In any other circumstances we'd have probably told her where to shove her table ..... but we were hungry and thirsty by now and DC was looking forward to their amazing pie and chips.

The Keele Postgraduate Association (KPA) bar, with it's 3 handpulls, was open all afternoon and provided a last opportunity for a rest and a farewell pint.

Great to be able to get out together at last. Let's hope we get many more opportunities
Cheers
